General Aims:

This Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is delivered by the Irish Ambulance Training Institute and is ideal for those wishing to pursue a career with the Emergency Services.  On successful completion of the PHECC NQEMT (National Qualification in Emergency Medical Technology) at EMT level they will be invited to apply to the Pre- Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC) for their practitioner's licence. PHECC are the national regulator for the Emergency Services in Ireland.  Once approved and placed on the national practitioners register, applications can be made by the practitioner for work within the private ambulance sector and also to the HSE for patient transfer positions.

Method of Delivery

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)  course is delivered through theory based lectures and presentations and practical skills classes and demonstrations. Students will also undertake a minimum 40 hours of Clinical Observation Placement in order to prepare completely for working in the field.

Duration

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course is made up of:

- 120 hours of in class learning (Approx. 4 weeks in total, but generally the course is run
on a week on/week off basis)

- 40 hours clinical placement

- 2 Days of examinations (MCQ's and OSCE's) with the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council


Assessment

The assessment for this Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)  course is carried out by the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council. There are two exams to be taken on separate days in order to receive qualification. There is a €100 examination fee that is payable directly to the Pre Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC).

  1. Firstly candidates will sit an MCQ (Multi Choice Question) examination to test their theory knowledge, retention and ability to apply this knowledge.
  2. Secondly candidates will be required to sit the OSCE's (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) which is a practical based exam.

Upon successful completions candidates will be invited to apply for their practioners license and to join the national register.

Class Times: 09:30 - 17:30 each day
